HomeResidentialPlatform lifts
Platform and wheelchair liftsPlatform lifts for raised entries and short rises.
A platform lift carries a wheelchair or scooter, and the person using it, from the ground to a porch, a raised entry or the next floor. It does the job of a ramp in a fraction of the space.
Vertical or inclined.
Vertical platform lifts
The platform travels straight up and down beside a porch, deck or garage step. Open models suit short rises. Enclosed models protect the rider from weather and can serve greater heights.
- Raised front entries and elevated homes
- Garage-to-house steps
- Decks, lanais and docks
Inclined platform lifts
The platform follows the line of an existing staircase on a rail, carrying the wheelchair with it, then folds against the wall when it isn’t in use.
- Staircases where an elevator won’t fit
- Straight or turning stairs
- Indoor and outdoor locations
Why platform lifts are common here.
Many Southwest Florida homes sit well above grade to meet flood requirements. A ramp to that height can run the length of the property. A vertical platform lift covers the same rise in a few square feet.
Outdoor lifts on the coast need the right materials and regular attention. We specify equipment rated for exterior use and service it with salt air in mind.
Ask about your entryPlatform lift FAQ
Is a platform lift the same as a home elevator?
No. A platform lift is a simpler machine intended mainly for wheelchair and scooter access over a limited rise. A home elevator has an enclosed cab, travels further and serves everyone in the house.
Can a platform lift be installed outdoors?
Yes. Many are designed for exterior use. We’ll recommend a model suited to where it will sit and how exposed it is.
Do you service platform lifts installed by someone else?
Yes. We maintain and repair platform lifts from the major manufacturers, whoever installed them.
What the site needs.
A level base
A concrete pad at the lower landing, sized to the lift. Where there is an existing slab or driveway, that is often enough.
A landing to arrive at
A porch, deck or doorway at the upper level with room to roll off the platform and turn. We check the door swing and threshold.
Power
A standard electrical supply near the lift. Many models also have battery backup so the lift can be lowered in an outage.
Gates and guards
A gate at the upper landing that only opens when the platform is there, and guards on the platform itself. These are safety requirements, not extras.
Using and looking after a platform lift.
A platform lift is operated by constant-pressure controls: you hold the button to travel and release it to stop. That makes it simple and safe for the person on the platform, and for a helper using the call station at either landing.
Outdoor lifts in Southwest Florida need attention. Salt air works on the drive, the switches and the safety edges, and an open lift collects sand and leaves. A yearly service, more often near the beach, keeps it reliable. Before a storm, lower the platform, switch off the power and, if the manufacturer supplies one, fit the cover.
If you are deciding between a ramp and a lift, the rule of thumb for ramps is about one foot of length for every inch of rise. A three-foot rise needs a ramp around thirty-six feet long. A platform lift covers the same rise in roughly five feet by five.
