Stairlift pricing and financial help

What a stairlift costs, and who can help pay for it.

A stairlift is the least expensive way to make a second floor reachable again. This page explains what decides the price and which programs may help with the cost in Florida.

Help with the cost

Programs worth checking before you pay in full.

We are not a benefits adviser, and eligibility is decided by each program. These are the routes our customers ask about most.

Veterans: VA health care

If you receive VA health care, a VA clinician can prescribe mobility equipment for your home when it is medically necessary. Start with your VA care team or the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service at your VA medical center.

Veterans: the HISA grant

The VA’s Home Improvements and Structural Alterations benefit pays for medically necessary changes to a veteran’s home. The lifetime amount is up to $6,800 for service-connected conditions and up to $2,000 for others. You apply with VA Form 10-0103, a VA prescription and an itemized estimate, which we can provide.

Florida Medicaid long-term care

Florida’s Medicaid long-term care program can pay for home accessibility adaptations for members who qualify, when the change is part of an approved care plan. If you are enrolled, ask your case manager whether a stairlift can be included.

Medicare

Original Medicare does not pay for stairlifts, because it treats them as home modifications and not as medical equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a home-safety or fall-prevention benefit. Check your plan documents or call the plan.

Tax deduction

The cost of equipment installed for a medical reason may count as a medical expense on your federal return. The rules have limits, so ask a tax professional before relying on it.

Local aging services

The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida and county senior services can point you to home-modification programs and grants that open and close through the year.

How we help with paperwork

An estimate your program will accept.

Most funding programs want the same things from the installer: an itemized written estimate, a description of the equipment and sometimes photographs of the staircase. We provide those at no charge after the survey, made out the way the program asks.

  • Itemized written estimate
  • Equipment description and specifications
  • Photographs of the stairs before installation

Is a stairlift the right choice?

A stairlift suits someone who can sit, transfer on and off, and does not need to take a wheelchair upstairs. It costs far less than an elevator and installs in a day.

If a wheelchair has to travel between floors, look at a home elevator. If the problem is the steps up to the front door, look at a platform lift.

Common questions

Stairlift cost FAQ

Why can’t you give a price over the phone?

Because the staircase decides most of it. A straight flight and a curved one are very different jobs. A short survey lets us give you one firm number.

Does Medicare pay for a stairlift?

Original Medicare does not. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer a home-safety benefit that may contribute. Your plan can tell you.

Can the VA pay for a stairlift?

For eligible veterans, yes, either as prescribed equipment through VA health care or with help from the HISA benefit. Your VA care team decides which applies. We supply the estimate and paperwork they need.

What does it cost to run and maintain?

Very little. A stairlift uses about as much electricity as a small appliance, and it needs a yearly check of the batteries, charging contacts and safety sensors.
